This event is part of Native Voices, the community-wide initiative to illuminate the historic legacy, current lives, and ongoing contributions of Native Americans in Lake Forest and Lake County. In Joseph Bruchac’s Code Talker, Ned Begay’s self respect is perhaps his most important attribute in that it allows him to stand up for himself, to pursue his goals, and to share his story. After being taught in a boarding school run by whites that Navajo is a useless language, Ned Begay and other Navajo men are recruited by the Marines to become Code Talkers, sending messages during World War II in their native tongue. ![]()
